- What's the difference between a conversation and a message?
- A conversation is a 24-hour window that opens when the first message is sent or received. All messages exchanged within that window are covered by a single conversation charge. You're billed once per window, not per individual message.
- When does a new conversation window open?
- A new window opens when a business sends a template message outside an existing open window, or when a customer sends an inbound message (which opens a free service conversation). Business-initiated messages within an open window don't create a new conversation.
- Why are rates different by country?
- Meta sets pricing based on the destination phone number's country, reflecting local market conditions, competitive dynamics, and Meta's infrastructure costs. Rates can change quarterly β always verify on Meta's official pricing page.
- Are these rates for the WhatsApp Business API specifically?
- Yes. These rates apply to the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API and On-Premises API), accessed through Meta directly or via Business Solution Providers (BSPs). The free WhatsApp Business App has different limits and no per-conversation charges.
- What conversations are free?
- Service conversations β where a customer messages your business first and you reply within the 24-hour window β are free. Meta also provides 1,000 free service conversations per month on each phone number for testing.
